Frequently asked questions.

What is the Commonwealth Legacy Foundation?

The Commonwealth Legacy Foundation is a Massachusetts-based nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting young people and communities across the Commonwealth with meaningful experiences through UMass Athletics. Our mission is to inspire the next generation of fans, students, and leaders by expanding youth access to games, events, and athletic programs.

Is the Foundation a registered nonprofit?

Yes. The Commonwealth Legacy Foundation is registered as a nonprofit in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Our IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status is pending approval, with a determination anticipated by mid-October. Once approved, it is expected to be retroactive to our date of formation, allowing donations to qualify as tax-deductible under IRS guidelines.

Are my donations tax-deductible?

Until federal tax-exempt recognition is officially granted, donations may not yet be tax-deductible. Once the IRS issues our 501(c)(3) determination, contributions will become retroactively tax-deductible to the date of formation. Donors are encouraged to consult their tax advisor regarding individual circumstances.

What UMass sports are supported?

The Commonwealth Legacy Foundation supports youth access and engagement across all UMass Athletics programs, with a special emphasis on Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Hockey, and Football. Donations help provide tickets, experiences, and opportunities for young fans to connect with UMass teams throughout the year.

How are donations used?

All donations directly support our youth engagement initiatives with UMass Athletics — including game-day experiences, community events, ticket access for youth organizations, and other programs designed to build pride and connection with the Commonwealth’s flagship university.

Do you accept donations of single-game tickets?

At this time, we do not accept donations of single-game tickets. Our goal is to provide tickets and experiences for groups — typically between 20 and 100+ youth per event — and we are not currently set up to manage individual ticket donations.

The best way to support our mission is through a monetary donation. On average, it costs about $7 per youth experience at a UMass Athletics game. That means when you donate $35, you’re sending five young fans to a game — and creating five big smiles in the process.

How can I get involved?

We are always looking for advisory board members, volunteers, youth organizations to partner with, and donors — both individuals and businesses — who share our vision.
